3 Ways to Talk to Your Physician About Information You Find On the Internet
DOYO Live Daily – Dr. Mike Sevilla gives three tips on how to talk to your doctor/clinician/provider to about the information that you find on the internet.
1) Use websites like WebMD, Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic and other reputable websites to find the information.
2) Print out the information – Now don’t bring in 50 pages, but printing out some of the information you find online will definitely give a starting point to discuss with your doctor.
3) Write down your specific questions – As well all know, that doctor’s visit can go pretty fast, so to help you remember, write down 2-3 key questions that you would like answered in relation to the information that you found online.

Who is Dr. Mike Sevilla? I’m a local guy who was born and raised in the Youngstown, Ohio area. I went to Cardinal Mooney High School, Youngstown State University, and the Northeast Ohio Medical University for my schooling. My Family Medicine residency was at Summa Barberton Hospital in Barberton, Ohio and I’ve been at the Family Practice Center of Salem and Salem Regional Medical Center since 2001.
Why go to a Family Physician? Family Physicians are personal doctors for people of all ages and health conditions. They are a reliable first contact for health concerns and directly addres most health care needs. Through enduring partnerships, Family Physicians help patients prevent, understand, and manage illness, navigate the health system and set health goals. Family Physicians and their staff adapt their care to the unique needs of their patients and communities. They use data to monitor and manage their patient population, and use the best science available to prioritize services most likely to benefit health. They are ideal leaders of health care systems and partners for public health. (source Health Is Primary). Check out the podcast above to see why I chose Family Medicine.
As far as my social media story, my interest in social media began in 2005, when I was a physician social media pioneer in the creation of social media content back then. I started blogging as an anonymous writer in 2006 with “The Doctor Anonymous” blog. Back when I started, I wanted to bring the reader into the exam room with me to share how it is to take care of patients in the broken US health care system. Although I don’t recommend it now, the culture back then was sharing stories about patients. I had no idea that people were interested in reading these stories.
In 2011, I made the decision to “rebrand” myself and change from The Doctor Anonymous blog to the Family Medicine Rocks website. My goal at that time was to have a voice for Family Medicine topics for the general public and a potential place for Family Medicine and Primary Care physicians to share a dialogue. From the podium at the 2011 American Academy of Family Physicians Congress of Delegates meeting, then AAFP President Dr. Glen Stream declared that I was the “King of Family Medicine Social Media.” Check out the video below.
In the summer of 2013, I decided to take a break from social media for a variety of reasons (I recommend review of blog posts entitled, “Blogging Anniversary,” “Reflections From Seven Years Online,” “The Race For Relevancy,” “Thanks For The Memories.”) After four weeks away from the internet, the site was rebranded “DrMikeSevilla.com.” In 2015, two great events occurred. First, I participated in the second ever TedXYoungstown event when I talked about Social Media and Medicine (see youtube video at the top of this page). Secondly. I was honored to be named a member of the External Advisory Board for the Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media and its Social Media Health Network.
